RESIST DYEING : PLAYING WITH LINES

The following samples were created during a design workshop on the theme of resist dyeing. After learning the basics of different types of shibori, I went ahead to explore in detail the possibilities with Arashi, a technique in which fabric is coiled on a circular surface and then tied with a thread to produce fine lines.

Learning the dyeing techniques
Inspired by the shadow-folding technique of Chris Palmer, I tried to achieve multi-directional lines by combining folds with the Arashi technique.
Several folds were explored with cotton fabrics of different weights. It was important to understand the fabric quality while controlling the dye penetration in each of the samples. With each trial sample, I also tried to perfect the lines along with resisting the negative sections of the designs.

The final deliverable for the workshop were two large piece samples.
